It was Round Ten as we welcomed Beaumaris to Princes Park. The Sharks had beaten us convincingly earlier in the season and were playing to stay in the mix for finals so we were expecting their best efforts.  With both sides missing key personnel it was important that our boys who came in played their role to help us get over the line.  Conditions were pretty good as the game started but fair to say it was a scrappy spectacle with a lot of intensity but also some basic errors from both teams. After the defences stood up from both groups it was one goal apiece at quarter time with scores level.

The second term was more of the same as the pressure was still high and ball movement was proving difficult. After two goals apiece for
the term at the long break we had snuck in front by two points.  The chat in the rooms was we were over possessing the ball too much and needed to take territory.  Pleasingly we started to get our game going and with our defence holding up we scored three goals to nil to lead by 22 points with a quarter to play.

The last term the game opened up a bit but we were unable to take our chances kicking 2.6 for the quarter. Despite some easy late goals given up, our defence held up well and we managed to scrap out a 20 point win.  Not every game is going to be full of highlights so we were proud to get the win even though it was an ugly one!

lndividually Lachie Treverton rucked most of the day against a quality opponent and gave our mids an opportunity at ground level.  ln the middle Josh Gasparini was a standout and stood up as one of our leaders.  Up forward Charlie Harrop was a clear winner kicking five of our eight goals for the day.  Down back I thought all our defenders really stood up when under pressure.  Special mention to Josh Vaughan playing his first senior game with the club.  JV played his role down back and didn't let us down.  Also it was great to have Rayner Seccull back in the team as his effort never wavers.

Next week we take on Old Trinity away before we have two weeks off for the mid season break.

How the VAFA saw the match:

Speaking of impressive seasons, Old Haileyburians have now peeled off eight straight wins after its 0-2 start to 2024, accounting for Beaumaris in a low-scoring game in Caulfield South.  With injured pair Brede Seccull and Jack Bell unavailable, Big V nominee Brodie Steele (33 disposals and nine marks) and Josh Gasparini (36 disposals, ten clearances) starred, while Charlton Harrop was mighty with 22 disposals, 12 marks and four goals.  But aside from Harrop, the Bloods found it difficult to apply serious scoreboard pressure in the 8.14 (62) to 6.6 (42) win, thanks to a Sharks backline that conceded just eight goals from a whopping 70 Old Haileybury inside 50s.

After five goals last week, James Magner was kept to one major, while spearhead Durras Seccull was kept goalless for the first time this season by a brilliant Cal Linehan (23 disposals, 22 intercepts, 11 one percenters).  “He was brilliant, he’s back to his defensive best,” said Sharks assistant coach Justin Wilson, while Spencer McLennan (30 disposals, eight rebound 50s) was also crucial.

Old Haileybury coach Daniel Ward was pleased with his team’s ability to wrest back control of the game after a contested first half, the Bloods recording 15 scoring shots to seven after the long break.  “The ability to hang in there and get it on our terms was pleasing in the end.”  Brede Seccull, who will miss this Saturday’s clash with Old Trinity with a finger injury, will still be able to push his case for Big V selection with a trip to Perth looming next weekend.  “I can’t vouch for Brede anymore,” said Ward of his gun midfielder.  “The (Big V squad) midfield is stacked…the higher the level of footy, the more he’ll excel.”

As for this weekend’s critical match-up with Old Trinity, the Bloods coach cannot wait.  “It’ll be a tough challenge…we’ll be putting all our eggs into this basket and trying to get the win”.

How the VAFA saw the match:

It was a little bit of history repeating itself out at Princes Park on Saturday morning, with Old Haileyburians falling to the Parkdale Vultures on home soil, as they did a number of weeks ago. The score differential back in Round 7 was 30 points, as it was again on the weekend with the final score reflecting 30-60.  Both sides were looking to break a streak of losses in this match up, alas for Haileyburians it wasn’t meant to be. They did well early to take a narrow two point advantage into the first break, however, couldn’t sustain the firepower of the Vultures from the second term onwards.

After settling into the match and finding their groove, Parkdale were looking in good form and did well to control the play from the centre. They doubled the Blood’s scoring opportunities with ensued them doubling their final score as well.  Sienna Symons impressed in front of the big sticks, slotting three for the day for the Vultures, whilst Lucy Burgess contributed two of her own. At the other end, Old Haileyburians' Pulli Gardiyawasam was the only dual goal scorer for her side. Sienna Allan and Ella Gown sit alongside Pulli as standout performers.

The U19's took on Bayside rivals Hampton Rovers in a game that would decide second place on the ladder at games end.  The leadership group have been driving some strong standards over the last two weeks and we saw a real improvement in our preparation pre-game and the results were amazing. We got off to a great start keeping Rovers goalless in the first quarter whilst kicking 3.4 ourselves, heading into the first break with a handy 2l-point lead.

We discussed not letting our good work go to waste and we knew that Rovers were a good side and would come out swinging and that is exactly what they did. After a couple of Rovers goals, we settled and were able to stretch the lead to 30 points at the main  break.  Quick sharp ball movement and a dominant mid-field meant that we maintained that lead throughout the third quarter and ended up winning by 37 points in the end.  We have now set the standards that will stand us in good stead for the remainder of the season and will keep driving these through to the finals.

Current school 1st XVlll players Keegan Mountford and Freddy Brayshaw had great games with both hitting the scoreboard and amongst the best players.  ln fact the Brayshaw boys (George & Freddy) both played great games.  In another positive, school 1st XVlll player, Arkie
Daniels-Ried will make his debut for the OHAFC this week lining up with his two mates.
