How the VAFA saw the match:
Old Haileyburians has posted back-to-back wins for the first time this season to be sitting inside the Top Four after kicking away in the third quarter of 2024 Premier B Grand Final rematch against De La Salle at Princes Park. De La was right in a hot first half, leading by a goal at quarter-time and trailing by just three points at the major break, before dynamic Bloods’ small forward Andreas Stefanakis grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck. The 20-year-old booted four goals in ten minutes early in the third term to kick his team out to what turned out to be a match-winning lead, claiming the VAFA SEN Skins Player of the Game Award in the process.
That 6-goal-to-2 third quarter propelled the Bloods to a 30-point lead at the last break and while De La Salle continued to fight on and narrowly won the final quarter, the overall result was never in doubt. Stefanakis has 10 goals in his last three games and 13 for the season. He looms as a critical piece of the Bloods’ push for September action, as when he is on song, he is as difficult to contain as any forward in the competition.
Daniel Ward (Old Haileyburians): “Scrappy win against a side that came to play. Full credit to De La, who put a lot of pressure on us, and we couldn’t get going early. We set the win up with a third quarter where we got on top in middle of the ground and gave our forwards more opportunities. We’ve lost a few boys, so our depth will be tested – we look forward to taking on Uni Blues next week.”
